Berkeley's argument consists of two parts.  On the one hand, he argues that we do not perceive material things, but only colours, sounds, etc., and that these are 'mental' or 'in the mind'.

From the perspective of Systemic Functional Linguistic Theory, we construe perceptual experience as meanings, which include material things, colours and sounds — that is, we mentally assign semiotic values to experiential tokens — and meanings are projected into semiotic existence by sensers engaged in mental processes.
